Draft Day Eve

The annual MLB draft is coming up. It starts Thursday with the first 2 rounds including the compensation and supplementary picks, Friday are rounds 3 to 10, and the remainder on Saturday. Will the Red Sox draft any Canadians? Will any local Alberta players be taken in early rounds?

Stay tuned as I will update any items pertaining to the Red Sox or local Canadian players on this site.

As far as the Red Sox, they pick 26th in the first round, and then again in the compensation round at 33rd overall (for losing Ellsbury as a FA). They then have picks in the 2nd and 3rd round at #67 and #103 overall.  Afterwards they will have a pick near the end of each subsequent round.   Two years ago, Boston picked BC native Keaton Briscoe who played for the Greenville Drive last year, and is expected to open the season with the Lowell Spinners when they get going next weekend.  There are plenty of good Canadian and Albertan players available in this year's draft. Let's see if any of them end up in the Sox organization.

On that note, the top Canadian in this year's draft is undoubtedly Gareth Morgan. He has been on the radar for a few years already, and this big outfielder has an excellent chance of being selected on the first day of the draft.  Top Albertans include LHP Tyrell King, third baseman Brendan Hendriks who was drafted by the Phillies in 2011, 3B/RHP Nolan Bumstead a former Calgary Redbird who is now at Vauxhall , first baseman Chayse Marion, and catcher Jordan Procyshen who has mentioned on these pages a few times. Hopefully we'll see these players and other top local players taken by MLB teams over the next few days.
